My story
Started out as a hairstylist
Starting when I was quite young, I declared I was going to become a hairstylist when I grew up. This dream was inspired by our family hairstylist Missy, who began cutting my hair when I was just a few years old. So I did just that, I graduated high school, completed beauty school, and got a job working for Missy at her salon. She helped me grow as a stylist and taught me many elements of running a small business.
Headed back to school
As a person in my 20’s I had achieved my very determined goal of becoming a hairstylist but I hadn’t thought much beyond that. I began exploring what other talents and interests I had. This led me back to school, initially enrolling in an Interior design program. This opened up other new ideas about how I could translate my creativity and visual design skills into a new career. After a few exploration classes, I switched to a Product design program that was focused on manufactured products.
Going with the flow
When I was more than half-way through my design degree, the school I was attending shuttered abruptly, leaving me and many students to scramble deciding the next steps. I was fortunate to find a school to transfer to with a program that further built upon what I had learned. After graduating, I still didn’t know exactly where I fit in the design industry. Throughout my school experience, I gained skills that were generalized but I wasn’t finding a job that fit my talents where I could continue to grow and build my new career.
Finding my path
Around this time, my mom was launching a new business and I felt inspired to design a website for her. As I was working on this, I began realizing how much I enjoyed web design and how it was a good fit for me. I have since also developed a website for the church I grew up attending. I’m excited to combine my years of experience working for small businesses and my design skills to find creative solutions for my clients.
